Introduction to Poker

There is some debate about the origins of poker, but the most accepted version is the one that traces its origin to a Persian game called Nas; the oldest reference to the modern game of poker in America is from 1830 in New Orleans. From there the game began to spread, following the Mississippi to the East. Right now, poker is the most popular and known card game.

Poker is played with a standard 52 card deck. The cards have values and an order (from lowest to highest): 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K, A. The Ace can also be played as the lowest card, in case you need it for a low straight. In some poker variations, wild cards are used to complete certain hands.

Poker has several variations, like Omaha, 5 card stud & 7-card stud Texas Hold'em. Poker is a simple game to learn, but since there are many deviations, mastering all the skills to be a good player in all is a hard task. Also, the fact that you don't play against the house and instead have to beat other players increases the degree of complexity.

The way the cards are dealt depends on the type of poker played; in some cases the cards are face down, while in others they are face up or a mix between the 2 options. In most of the poker games the objective is to make the best hand possible using 5 from the cards allowed to be used by the players, and in every round a bet is made that goes to the pot. Your bankroll will increase in case you win the pot, or decrease if you lose; it is a good strategy to know when to fold a hand.

Despite that, like in any other card game, the luck factor plays a really good part in the outcome of things, the game of poker relays more on the perception and skill of the players. There are several factors involved in any hand you play: the strength of your hand, the strength of the opponent's hands, the size of the pot, what cards you should or shouldn't play, when to call, raise or fold, etc. But among all of these, perception, emotions and style of play of every participant play the most important role. If you can read the emotions, style of play and cards of your opponents you will be able to make winning decisions at the right moment. Some of the most skilled players can win a poker game even with low and poor cards, if they can bluff their opponents.
